If this is an alpha test, then graphics and character customization can wait. Main thing I would suggest working on is server stability, killing the bugs (I stutter step when I run), and coding in everything that should be in there (which only you know).
I approach the game differently when it comes to alpha testing, beta testing, and playing the release version. I think by beta, you should have the graphics polished off, the backstory fleshed out and available, the ground rules layed out, all the code that should be in there, in there, and all that should be done in beta is trying to break what you have, fixing what we broke (bugs), and stress testing.
Also, I would suggest testing specific things during our play sessions. Things that have been worked on by the devs. Say for instance you created a town and put some NPC's in there that can interact. Our goal would be to zone in and zone out without any problems, approach everything without nothing funky going on in the city, and talking to every NPC and getting the desired results. Then you can fix whatever we found and test something new the next time.
I'm no expert, or game developer, so take my opinion for what it's worth. I'm only offering what I think other developers do when they are testing. I cannot be sure, since I've never tested anything earlier than a beta client.

I like your original idea of having the gods give you magical powers and the player developing his own spells and spell branches. We just need a systematic way of doing it. Basically, we need to know the ground rules for acheiving it. We don't need you to tell us step by step on what to do, rather we just need to know how. For example, when I found out you just needed to pray to the gods, that was enough information for me to begin. I like the whole herald of the gods idea.

I am well aware of the usual process of coding, alpha testing, beta testing and product launch. We are deliberately doing it differently. Sorry if that's confusing.
We are still working on a document that will explain how things are supposed to work. The problem is it needs to be concise and there is a lot to explain.
